This is an observation from a friend of mine from high school. He pointed out that, among the top countries, it is generally accepted that the American school system is the easiest. In the United States, Utah is at the bottom of the list. In Utah, Wasatch High School is at the very bottom of that list. His point was that by the time we graduated from high school, we were the dumbest kids in the WORLD!! I might have believed that was true.....until I read this blog.
Read these, you will laugh....I promise. Be sure to read the comments...that is where the best one is.

Those were pretty funny :)
Utah is not at the bottom, but we do spend the least amount of money --most bang for your buck, if you will. But funny, nonetheless. 8th graders are all evil. I know of no teacher who would disagree.
I concur. Evil. Never taught em, never will (knock wood). I'm working on creating a rift in the space-time continuum so I can avoid 8th grade with my own children.
And thanks for the Utah Ed plug, Lisa. Even though we don't spend enough money on our kids (I think we jockey with Mississippi for 50th in the nation), our students perform very well. And I happen to know that our science curriculum (along with a few other states') serves as a model for science curriculum development in the nation.
I did, however, watch Jay Walkers on Leno the other night, which made me worry about the intelligence of Americans. Yikes.
I don't mean to knock the Utah School system (my mom is a teacher in Midway). I just thought it was funny that we managed to leave school as almost the stupidest kids in the universe. I know that there are lots of good teachers in the system and it is a very thankless job. I was the PTA volunteer for picture day and wanted to strangle every second grader.
Today was Lulu's b-day party. I invited all the girls from her class. The two girls that she always talks about were very sweet and I like their moms. There was one girl that made me want to rip my skin off. I don't know what I would do if she wanted to be best friends w/ THAT girl. This is why I couldn't be a teacher...I only like the kids if they are cute and or obedient. The minute they get back chatty I am done with them.
Bravo teachers!!
P.S. Words out of my childs mouth today.....
"mom, my hair looks disgusting" &
"Mom, I just don't think you know what you are talking about".
Welcome to five. The sad part is that when she was three I distinctly remember thinking "I just don't enjoy 5 year old girls"......am I gonna make it to 6? I know that when she is 13 I will look back at 5 and wish for it again but I am not sure.....

I really might be on the bottom of the smart list....I didn't even go back and read that last post...the spelling is awful.
Maybe the dumb thing is the age. I think the brain becomes severed from the spinal cord somewhere around age 12 or 13. It usually starts re-connecting around age 16 to 17, although in some it takes much longer. Usually by age 22 or 23 it is mostly re-connected and these people become normal humans again. The odd thing is that I really like being around these CNS-severed folks! I had the giggles for about 20 minutes today just from sitting next to some 15 and 16 year olds. Maybe my own brain just didn't reconnect completely.
When Jen Galan was doing her student teaching for her masters my favorite thing was to read her students' papers. "So then he texted her about how she was so fine but she was grounded."
I know what would make me smile. An update!
I keep checking. Though I did like your lice story on someone else's blog I read. Poor kids. Poor you, having to miss your party.
I keep trying to update. It is hard to have an extended time on the computer when the kids are around, and Derek goes to bed the same time they do. Since the computer is in our room......
All my free time this weekend was spent doing laundry, steaming the carpets and furniture and nit combing hair. We got re infested somehow so we had to start all over again.....grrrrrr.
That stinks! You had to waste another weekend at the mercy of those pre-historic insects. Ick.
Didn't you know anyone with whom you had a score to settle? Anyone who'd looked askance at Lulu? It would have been a great time to invite them over!
Carina,
That is a great idea. I was thinking of making a baby blanket or buying a hat or something and rubbing it all over my children's hair and then sending it to Jacob's birthmother, and the AG's office in Chicago. Michelle, for obvious reasons, and the AG's office for not doing anything about it!! Great idea.
For the record, lice and afro's don't mix well. My poor little baldy. Now we are for sure not doing Mr. T. What kind of Mr.T doesn't have a mohawk?
GREAT picture of you two. :-)
sorry about the lice! We haven't had to deal with that yet. Caleb was a really cute Harlem Globetrotter. You could do that with him being bald. We just bought him a red/white/blue headband and a little track suit. Cute as a button!
Maybe Mr. T will make an appearance next year and he'll be old enough to say "I pity the fool!"
Yup.
We found live bugs again!! This is the fourth day in a row. It seems we have the strong, yet elusive, super lice. The ones that are not affected by otc remidies. We had to pull out the big guns tonight--prescription shampoo. Grrrr.
I am going to steam the carpets and furniture, wash all the bedding and clothes again, for the third time this week. What is trying to be taught here?
Christy, it looks like you had fun into So Cal, did you smell the fires?
I remember as a kid when we had the epidemic. In an energetic, enthusiastic voice, my little sister announced to my mother (in front of the CLEAN kids in the neighborhood) that she had learned at school that day that she had lice. Lovely. We did the prescription shampoo and everything a couple of times, but mom finally kicked the critters (a couple of weeks later) by making us all sleep outside for a few nights and doing super-mega, hot, bleach laundry. Loads of fun! Good luck.
Didn't smell the fires. But, we couldn't get away from the news coverage. All fires all the time. The day we left it was pretty grey but I couldn't tell if it was from the fires or just smog.
I did have a great time, though!
NO MORE LICE!!! GO AWAY!!!
(just my little effort to help you in your time of need)
I remember getting lice as a kid with my little sister from some kid at church. I hated that nasty prescription shampoo and those tiny little combs (although I'm sure my mom hated it more!) And anyone else remember the school nurse with her gloves and little tongue depressor picking through every kids hair for a periodic lice check? Fun job.
I don't know which is worse, doing all the clean up--or having Lulu home from school, AGAIN. We didn't see bugs this am, but we are not going to give them a chance. We are nit combing like maniacs now. We are STILL going to Disneyland (I have been assured that it will be cleared up by then). That will give everything in our house a chance to die too. This is such a pain. The sleep outside thing is a good idea.
I went to buy new pillowcases, because unlike dishes, we have one for each pillow. I take it off, wash it and put it right back on. New pillowcases at Target were 12.00 for two. New pillows were 2.99. We got new pillows. I wanted to put this in after reading Loriens pannies dilema. Clearly I would just be throwing them away......I am lazy......
Thanks for the advice. It is back to the washer for me. THank GOODNESS for washers.
Hey Bek, quick question, when are you going to Disneyland? It wouldn't be the weekend of the 14th would it?
We are going on Thursday. Why? are you going to be in SoCal on the 14th?
I also got you message about coming out a week later, that is no problem we are ready when you are.
