Zulu Knots

I have started practicing on Norah's hair. It is good for me to get used to doing it and it is good for her to get used to me doing it. I cannot do braids yet. They are HARD!!! Maybe her hair isn't long enough yet. The only kind of row styles that I can do are flat twists. Baby steps I guess......

These are Zulu Knots (the parts are terrible but I didn't have a comb, just my fingers). I didn't use any kind of elastic on her hair, I just twisted the hair down and wrapped it around itself and it stayed all night. These are also sometimes called Nubian Knots. I know that there is a technical way to do these and I doubt that I did it the right way. This time I just parted the hair into 4 inch sections. I split each section in half and twisted each half. I then twisted the two sections together and wrapped it around itself into a bun and tucked the ends in. Next time I am going to Lu's hair in Zulu knots too!!

Derek LOVES it when it is braided of clipped up, I think it makes her look too old. She just isn't my girl if she doesn't have her soft Afro. This is how she looks like my girl...

And, just because we can't leave Jacob out of all this, here is how he will always look in my mind... half naked (or all naked usually) with some GREAT shoes and often one of my purses.

Those knots are just about the cutest thing I've ever seen! She looks so adorable. My little 3 year old girl's birthfather is AA (her birthmother is a fair redhead like me)so she has super-curly hair too. I thought it would be intimidating, but I LOVE it! (she didn't get hair until age 2 though, so I'm jealous of Norah's hair!)

Her hair is adorable! I wish I could do that to my daughter's hair. You're right - it does make Norah look older!

Leisha--you need a blog. You are so interesting and I click on your profile and NOTHING!! :-) Curly hair is fun, but more work. The problem right now seems to be that because Nori's hair is still soft, most of the AA products are too heavy for her. I have been checking out the biracial hair products, I would love any input...

Suzi--HI!!! How are you feeling? Are you ready for that baby to come? It is good to hear from you and I love the updates at your blog. I cannot believe how cute the hat and booties you made were... sheesh...

On Eva's hair I use Luster's SCurl no drip activator/moisturizer. It's pretty light and seems to work well on her biracial curls.

I'm going to have to try out this hairstyle on her today.

She looks so cute! It is fun learning new styles. My oldest son loves to have his twisted, he has some serious micro curls so the twists stay put, but my middle sone has looser curls and his just makes a great afro, but he doesn't want one, but he did have a cute one when he was a baby. :) I took our foster dd we had to a salon and they taught me a lot, we did those knots and braids and flat ironed it (she was 6/7 when we had her) and did what I call the Mickey mouse puffs which I think are adorable.

Have fun!

I think that micro curls are a great way to describe N's hair... the curls are very defined (not frizzy) and the size of a pen spring.....

Victoria.. I love those, we call them afro puffs. I am still trying to find a salon to teach me that stuff....

(Not to distract from the adorable subject at hand, Norah's Hair!) Sidenote: I do have a blog, but I'm constantly conflicted about making it more public. My Mom and sister lecture me on the 'dangers of blogging', yet I enjoy the humor, comfort and shared information I get daily. Any words of wisdom?

I have some hair style books "it's all good hair" and "kinky Kreations" and out of all the styles Zulu knots are my favorite! You did a great job and she looks so cute!

I have both of those and have been very grateful for all the info.. but braiding is still pretty hard for me!!!

Leisha,Blogging has been a great way for me to meet new people. YOu can get a passoword protected one so that you don't have to share it w/ everyone.... or you can change the names and places enough that you are still annonymous. Your face is out there, but the names aren't...

I have found that (esp w/ adoption stuff) reading the blogs of others has been priceless and I have made some really great face friends from blogging too....
